Governing Board

Julie Turner

I have been an educator all my life.  I served as a reading specialist in middle schools for 13 years in Massachusetts.  Looking for a new challenge and more knowledge about learning and effective teaching, I earned my doctoral degree in Education and Psychology at the University of Michigan.  While teaching at both Penn State and University of Notre Dame, I worked with teachers in their classrooms to support students’ learning and their motivation to learn.  After moving to Taos in 2015,  I was invited to join Vista Grande’s governing board.  Vista Grande's mission to serve as an alternative to traditional schooling is much needed in Taos, where many students feel alienated from school and seek options for diverse opportunities after graduation.  I am fortunate to be able to contribute to that mission.

Shona Mares-Bond

Shona Bond has been with Vista Grande serving on the Governing Board for over 5 years.  She’s a parent of a former Vista Grande High School graduate, she’s a lifelong resident of Taos, and went to the local public schools K-12.  She has an Associate’s Degree in Criminology, as well as a Certified Medication Assistant through the New Mexico Board of Nursing.  She has worked with the mentally disabled population through Santa Maria El Mirador.  Shona enjoys the outdoors, all activities (ice fishing, snowmobiling, all of it) with family!  Currently  working with Taos County with the Foster Grandparent Senior Companion Program, through AmeriCorps Senior and Aging and Long-Term.

Mat Whitener

It is an honor and privilege to serve as a board member for Vista Grande High School.  Mat brings to the table over ten years of experience working with individuals and families from underserved populations throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, Arizona and here in New Mexico.  During this time, Mat has assisted homeless veterans and their families in obtaining permanent housing; working as a High School social worker working with McKinney Vento students in pursuing higher education and/or gaining sustainable housing.  Before serving his communities, Mat served in the United States Air Force as a Civil Engineer High Voltage Electrician.

Harold Cordova

Harold Cordova is a member of the Red Willow people of Taos Pueblo.  He is a Rancher and loves connecting with people and nature. Harold is a lifetime council member of Taos Pueblo, and he loves Vista Grande High School!

Mark Goldman

Mark Goldman, AIA, is full-time faculty in Construction Technology at UNM-Taos.  He has a B.A. in Studio Art from the University of California, an M.S. in Green Building, and is the 2004 Distinguished Alumni of the Boston Architectural College where his professional degree was granted.  His secret passion is surfing, which he still finds time to enjoy.
